Japanese Rightists' Unrequited Love to Taiwan Once I wrote on my diary that I respect Mr. agincourt's resolution on Enjoy Korea. But I regret writing that. Today I have read his blog and got to know that he is a kind of military geek. His post I read is about possession of air carrier by China. I should admit that I was surprised by his vast knowledge about air carriers like how they were vulnerable and were damaged during battle; of course it's including Imperial Japanese Navy's air carriers. I think basic knowledge is always important for anything. But what he has written on his post seems to be grotesque, which makes me uncomfortable. Air carrier is used for war, and its purpose is to destroy enemy. So many people have been killed by air fighters and bombers having taken off from air carriers. And in the Pacific War, air carriers in both sides were targeted and attacked. This means that so many sailors had lost their lives and sunk with air carriers. Putting aside those tragedies and arguing strategic values of air carriers as if he was in the higher place, it seemed to be disgusting. I applauded him because he wrote as below But time for nationalism will soon be over. Japan should go on living quietly. Nationalism more than present will waste resources of globe; perhaps will kill not only our country but also the world. And listen, I will change the world. (#1). But it seems that what he is doing is opposite to what he wrote. He wrote on August 31st, 2008, It is sure that Taiwan is influenced by Chinese culture, but it should be emphasized that Taiwan is not identified as China (Of course it should not be integrated to China). In fact, I have started fighting for it(#2). I guess that what he means by "fight for it" is the independent movement from China. I think this is not the matter that Japanese interfere, but the matter that should be solved by Taiwanese and Chinese themselves. In addition to that, if my memory is correct, he also wrote on Enjoy Korea once that Taiwan colonialization by Japan would be someday evaluated. For those, I should have not supported anything that he wrote. ----------------------------------------------------------------- I think it is not good to spend so much time for internet, but anyway, I have read Mr. Gregory Clark's writings today. It was "Japan sidelined on Taiwan"(Friday, June 6, 2008). I don't like that English and Japanese versions are displayed side by side in the same page. There are few people who can read both. Almost of all people read just one of the two. And I just read Japanese which does not help brushing my English reading. Let me quote two parts of his writings that I was interested in Its conservatives and rightwingers seemed to think that sentimental pre-1945 colonial links and the presence of pro-Japan oldtimers, such as former Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui, would somehow translate into close ties allowing Taiwan to move closer to independence under Japan's aegis. A very large Japanese delegation headed by the archconservative former LDP luminary Takeo Hiranuma, and including Tokyo Gov. Ishihara Shintaro, attended Ma's inauguration ceremony. To their chagrin, Ma managed to avoid any mention of Japan in a speech devoted mainly to hopes of closer ties with China. "Its conservatives and rightwingers" means those of Japan. Japanese rightists often show their unrequited love to Taiwan. They believe that what Imperial Japan did during colonial era was good for people in Taiwan. It seems that Japanese rightists are very satisfied by believing that. In other words, they utilize people in Taiwan for their preference. But I think it should be noted that Taiwanese were suffered severely from control by Kuomintang government who came from the mainland China after their defeat by Communist Army in 1949. Therefore, for some people, Japanese colonial era seemed to be slightly better than after 1949. I think Japanese should pay attentions to these sensitive issues and should not use the issue to satisfy their preference for strong Empire of Japan in the past, which eventually collapsed for its extensive aggressive wars to foreign countries. Following senesces written by Mr. agincourt on Enjoy Korea are translated into English by me and used in today's post. If there are some mistakes, it will be my responsibility. Please note that I am against #2. ----------------------------------------------------------------- The image below has nothing to do with today's post. |
