Chicago's Guitarist Terry Kath died on January 23rd, 1978, it's 31 Years Ago

My small radio automatically turns on every morning, which is tuned to AFN radio on 810 kHz. So I am wakening up by the radio everyday, listening to Rock History and Digital Pro Kim Komando. This morning, while I was half awaken and half sleepy, I could barely understand that today is the day that Chicago's guitarist Terry Kath died. According to their web site, his death is described as below;

On January 23, l978, Chicago guitarist and singer Terry Kath died from an accidental gunshot wound.

It was a tragedy for everyone who loves Chicago's songs. And it is surprising that more than thirty years have already passed since he was killed by mistakenly loaded pistol. I have recently listened to a duet song "Dialogue" which is between Terry Kath and Peter Cetera. At the first, I didn't understand what they were dialoguing each other at all. So I searched and found lyrics of the song through the internet. When I read it, I was so surprised because the lyric is so much political.

In the song, Terry is anxious, on the other, Peter is optimistic. But I think anxiety and optimism do not have equalities in the song, I mean, it seems like Peter's optimism is to strengthen Terry's anxiety. Maybe I am wrong, but it's sure that the song "Dialogue" is at least a political song with Terry's words as below.

Don't you feel repression just Closing in around?

Does it make you angry with the war dragging on?

Don't you ever see the starvation in the city where you live, all the needless hunger all the needless pain?

After his death in 1978, the band is said to have few hit songs, though I am not sure. But in 80's, Chicago had many hit songs on the chart. When "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" was on the chart, I was a junior high school student in rural area of Japan. I often listened to that song on Saturday afternoon, because it was the time that American Top 40 was on the air.

Chicago, the band had once sung very political songs in late 60's and 70's, had many hit songs on the chart in 80's which were very sweet and mellow love songs. Holy smoke, I don't know what to say about it, though I never dismiss their hit songs in 80's as bad. The world might have been changed with time, I don't know, perhaps it has become better and better, decade by decade. But can we say that we have already solved "all the needless hunger all the needless pain" in this world?
