June 23rd is the day that organized resistance of Japanese Imperial Army ended in Okinawa, 1945

Not so many people pay attention for what day is today, or what had been happening on war-torn Okinawa until this day in 1945. Why we don't care about that tragedy? Is it because it happened so many years ago on the island far from here? I think that we Japanese should think more about the battle in Okinawa particularly from April to June every year.

The battle of Okinawa is one of major and most severe battles in the Pacific War that was fought between the United States of America and Empire of Japan. On April 1st in 1945, US Forces landed on the main island of Okinawa. At that time, US's victory and Japan's lost had already been clear, but Japanese Forces and government did not stop fighting at that point. If Japan had had surrendered in March, more that one hundred thousand civilian's in Okinawa could have been saved. It was the disastrous thing that Empire of Japan had come to be a nation as a war-machine that didn't care about people's lives.

What Japanese Forces intended to the battle of Okinawa was just to create time to prepare for another and more desperate battle on main land of Japan. So none of officers in the Headquarters of the Imperial Japanese Army believed that Japan would win the battle on Okinawa. They knew that soldiers were going to die and lose the island. The battle was ended in terms of organized resistance of Japanese Forces on June 23rd. In the early morning, Lieutenant General USHIJIMA Mitsuru and Major General CHOU Isamu committed suicides (#1)

As to the high ranking officer, Navy Rear Admiral OHTA Minoru who shot himself on June 13th (#2) is also very famous for his words on telegraph that applauded how people in Okinawa fought for Japanese Forces. Although these episodes are well-known to some extent, if we thought about all the victims of the Battle of Okinawa, we could not have enough time to consider. But it is what we have to do today.
