object for displaying fireworks bullet and launcher in from of the Nagaoka Station
Nagaoka is famous for fireworks held on August 2nd and 3rd. When 3 feet bullet "Sanjakudama"is launched, it becomes 2,000 feet diameter fireworks in the sky. But please don't forget one of the purpose of the fireworks is to remember the disaster of air raid that happened in midnight of August 1st in 1945.
a bus of Echigo-Kotsu in front of Nagaoka Station
An Echigo-Kotsu Bus was just leaving bus terminal in front of Nagaoka Railway Station. Echigo-Kotsu is the name of the company that runs bus networks in Chuetsu region of Niigata prefecture including Nagaoka.
main street of downtown Nagaoka
They get so much snow during winter, so walkway is covered by roof. In the old times, small roofs were put in front of houses along street it was just narrow space such that one person could walk, which was called Gangi.
statue of navy admiral Yamamoto
Just several minutes walk from main street, you can get to the Yamamoto Memorial Park. He was the Navy Admiral when the Pacific War started, and was killed in aerial battle in southern pacific ocean. His name "Isoroku" implies that He was born when his father was 56 years old.
re-built house where navy admiral Isoroku Yamamoto was born
There is a rebuilt house in small "Yamamoto Memorail Park". I guess the original house was burned in Nagaoka Air Raid, but I am not sure. A paper on the door at entrance was saying that if you want to see inside house, come and get a key at a nearby store.
water covered alley in Nagaoka in winter time. Groundwater is used to melt the snow on the road surface
Groundwater is used to melt snow on the road. It is said that too much use of the water sometime causes subsidence, but I am not sure. Everytime you walk on road like this, your shoes become wet.
water splashing in the middle of the road pavement
Water is splashing. It helps car driving, but if you just walk on the road, soon you feel water comes into your shoes. And sometimes water is directly hitting your legs. While people in Nagaoka are experiencing this everyday, people in the Kanto region are enjoying fair sky. High mountains between Nagaoka and Kanto make big differences.
Yamamoto Isoroku Memorial Museum
Yamamoto Isoroku Memorial Museum is located a little apart from the memorial park. In the museum, a part of wing of the airplain is displayed. The plain that the admiral was on board, was shut down by US air fighter P-38 above Bougainville Island at 07:30 on April 18th, 1943.
Nagaoka Station
Okay, I got back to the railway station. It is not only the station, but also a shopping moll, named "Cocolo Nagaoka".
FURENDO means friend, the name of the fastfood restaurant in Nagaoka, famous for noodle 'Italian'
Red four letters say "FURENDO", which means "friend". This is must-go in Nagaoka. This fastfood corner serve a famous noodle "Italian". I don't know the reason why the noodle is called Italian, but it should not be a big problem.
Italian 550yen and a cup of Coke
I bought one Italian, large size, and a cup of coke. I remember both costed about 6 dollar.
Italian, noodle famous in Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture
I ate "Italian" with chop sticks. It seemed that not only normal Italian, curry and Kimch toppings were available, though I didn't try them.
enlarged photo of Italian of FURENDO(friend) in Nagaoka
The noodle is thicker than spagetti, but thiner than Udon. I cannot describe the what it was like about sause on the noodle. But I like it.
